A Local's Guide to Vancouver Island

Wild beaches, coastal towns, and unforgettable adventures.

Welcome to Iife on the West Coast of Canada. Before calling Vancouver Island home, this was a place I often visited with my family growing up. I remember coming here as a kid and feeling like I was on a different planet. The contrast between Northern Ontario and the island is uhm...rather different to say the least.

Vancouver Island is one of those places that quietly steals your heart. With rugged coastlines, old-growth forests, charming towns, and endless outdoor adventure, it’s a place where nature sets the pace. Whether you’re visiting for the first time or exploring like a local, here are some of the best things to see and do in this place we call home.

1. Explore the Wild Beaches of Tofino & Ucluelet

Tofino is famous for its long sandy beaches, crashing waves, and relaxed surf-town vibe. Spend a day walking Long Beach, watching surfers at Cox Bay, or storm watching in the winter.

Looking for a place to stay? Checkout our link on the website to our little getway on Terrace Beach in Ukee (that's what the locals call it)

Don’t miss:

  • Chesterman Beach
  • Cox Bay
  • Wild Pacific Trail (Ucluelet)
  • Long Beach

2. Visit Cathedral Grove

Located in MacMillan Provincial Park, Cathedral Grove is home to towering Douglas fir trees that are over 800 years old. Walking among these giants is one of the most magical experiences on the island. I've been doing it for 39 years and it never gets old. Trust me, you won't want to miss it.

3. Wander the Harbour in Victoria

British Columbia’s capital city is full of charm. Walk the Inner Harbour, visit the Royal BC Museum, and stop by the historic Fairmont Empress Hotel. If you have time, checkout the Malahat Skywalk en route.

Things to do in Victoria:

  • Butchart Gardens
  • Fisherman’s Wharf
  • Beacon Hill Park
  • Chinatown (Fan Tan Alley)

Some of our favourite nightlife to-dos:

  • Irish Times - great live music, insanely large selection of craft beer and just an overall fun time
  • Tapas in Trounce Alley has a great atmosphere and delish food
  • Big Bad Johns - if you're into throwing peanuts on the floor and a small bar filled with bras all over then this is the place to be

4. Go Whale Watching

Vancouver Island is one of the best places in the world to see whales.

You may spot:

  • Orcas
  • Humpback whales
  • Grey whales
  • Sea lions and seals

Popular departure points include Victoria, Tofino, and Campbell River.

5. Hike Through Ancient Rainforest

The island is home to some of the most incredible hiking in Canada.

Great hikes include:

  • Mystic Beach (Juan de Fuca Trail)
  • Elk River Trail (Strathcona Park)
  • Wild Pacific Trail

6. Visit Small Coastal Towns

Some of the best parts of Vancouver Island are its small communities.

Worth exploring:

  • Comox & Cumberland – charming mountain town with great biking trails
  • Cowichan Valley – wineries and farm markets
  • Port Alberni – gateway to amazing backcountry
  • Nanaimo – seaside walkways and great food

7. Explore Strathcona Provincial Park

This is the largest park on Vancouver Island and a paradise for outdoor lovers.

Highlights:

  • Della Falls
  • Forbidden Plateau
  • Alpine lakes and rugged mountain peaks

8. Stop at Famous Goats on the Roof in Coombs

One of Vancouver Island’s most unique roadside attractions is the Old Country Market in Coombs, famous for its goats grazing on the grass roof. It’s quirky, fun, and a must-see stop when traveling between Nanaimo, Parksville, and Tofino.

Inside the market you’ll find fresh baked goods, local foods, international treats, and plenty of unique gifts. Outside, visitors can watch the goats wander the rooftop while exploring the surrounding shops and cafés in the small village of Coombs.

Nearby favourites to checkout:

  • Little Qualicum Falls
  • Qualicum Beach - checkout the town and make your way to the beach at low-tide

9. Take a Boat Trip to Hot Springs Cove

Tucked deep in the coastal wilderness north of Tofino, Hot Springs Cove is a magical experience that feels like something out of a dream. The journey begins with a boat ride or float plane trip through Clayoquot Sound, where you may spot whales, sea lions, bald eagles, and even black bears along the shoreline.

Once you arrive, a beautiful boardwalk through old-growth rainforest leads you to a series of natural geothermal pools built into the rocky coastline. The warm mineral water cascades down into pools overlooking the wild Pacific Ocean — a perfect place to relax after the walk in.

It’s one of the most unique adventures on Vancouver Island and well worth the trip.

Local tip: Visit during low tide when the pools are warmest and most accessible.

10. Slow Down and Enjoy the West Coast Lifestyle

One of the best things about Vancouver Island is the slower pace of life. Walk the beach at sunset, watch the tide roll in, or enjoy a coffee overlooking the ocean.

Sometimes the best plans are no plans at all.
